Guardian Certification Background Screening Requirement
To help maintain safe training environments for children, families, and vulnerable participants, all MHIMAI Guardian Certification applicants are required to complete an FBI Identity History Summary background check before certification can be issued.
MHIMAI partners with nationally recognized fingerprinting providers to ensure your information is handled securely and professionally.
Before You Begin
Please have the following available:

A valid government-issued photo ID

Your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID

An email address you check regularly

A payment method for the fingerprinting and FBI processing fees
Please note that fingerprinting and FBI processing fees are paid directly to the fingerprinting provider and are separate from MHIMAI certification fees.
Step 1 – Schedule Your Fingerprinting Appointment
Visit PrintScan and schedule an FBI Identity History Summary fingerprint appointment at the location most convenient for you.

Step 2 – Attend Your Appointment
Bring:

Government-issued photo ID
-
Appointment confirmation

Any additional documents requested by PrintScan
At your appointment, your fingerprints will be collected electronically by a trained technician.
Step 3 – Complete the FBI Request
Follow the instructions provided by PrintScan to complete your FBI Identity History Summary request.
Depending on your circumstances, you may receive your results electronically or by mail. Processing times vary but electronic submissions are generally completed more quickly than paper submissions.
Step 4 – Download Your FBI Results
Once your Identity History Summary is available:

Download the official PDF issued by the FBI.

Save a copy for your records.

Do not alter, edit, or password-protect the document.
Step 5 – Submit Your Results to MHIMAI
Log in to your MHIMAI account.
Navigate to:
My Certifications → Background Check Submission
Upload:

Your official FBI Identity History Summary PDF
Your submission will be reviewed by MHIMAI.
You will receive an email once your background check has been reviewed.
What Happens Next?
Your background check will be reviewed alongside your certification requirements.
Once approved, you may proceed to certification (or renewal) if all other requirements have been completed.
If additional information is required, our Certification Team will contact you using the email associated with your MHIMAI account.

Why is this required?
MHIMAI exists to help create safer training environments for youth and vulnerable populations. National criminal history screening is one part of our commitment to safeguarding those we serve.
Does MHIMAI receive my fingerprints?
No.
Your fingerprints are collected and processed by authorized fingerprinting providers and the FBI. MHIMAI only reviews the completed FBI Identity History Summary that you submit.
Will this affect my certification?
Most applicants successfully complete this requirement.
Certain criminal convictions or pending offenses involving violence, abuse, sexual misconduct, exploitation of vulnerable persons, or other disqualifying conduct may require additional review or may affect eligibility for certification.
How long does the process take?
Many electronic submissions are processed within several days, although processing times may vary depending on FBI workload and other factors.
How often do I need to complete a background check?
Guardian Certification requires a current FBI background check for initial certification and again intervals in accordance with MHIMAI policies.
